Imagine a supply chain that never falters, no matter the challenges. At Coherent this is the reality we strive to create with our resilient supply chain. Experts agree that companies with resilient supply chains are 60% more likely to achieve above-average growth and profitability, helping their customers remain competitive in the market.

In industries like optical networking for AI applications, supply chain ensures that critical innovations are delivered on time, even during tumultuous periods. Recognition from customers through awards and honors we receive further underscores the importance of resilience as a competitive differentiator.

Why Supplier Resilience Matters

In today’s unpredictable business landscape—marked by geopolitical tensions, supply chain shortages, and fluctuating demand—supplier resilience has become a crucial competitive advantage. Global supply chains are more interconnected than ever, but they are also more prone to disruptions. Whether it's a natural disaster, political conflict, sudden shifts in customer demand, or new regulations and tariffs, we must be prepared to manage risks and keep our operations running smoothly. Supplier resilience is not just about bouncing back; it focuses on maintaining continuity and minimizing impacts on operations and customers to be the first to market.

The Three Pillars of Our Resilience

At Coherent, we approach supplier resilience with three core principles: Agility, Flexibility, and Proactivity. Our model includes vertical integration, a global manufacturing strategy and a broad portfolio of transceiver offerings. Together, these elements ensure uninterrupted service, empowering you to drive efficiency and innovation swiftly.

Broad and Flexible Technology Platforms

Innovation thrives on versatility. By using a broad technology base- including GaAs (Gallium Arsenide), InP (Indium Phosphide), and silicon photonics - we unlock possibilities for customers in datacom and AI applications. These platforms deliver advanced solutions through a seamless, one-stop-shop, helping customers innovate and achieve their goals efficiently. Additionally, by using shared manufacturing facilities and common components across our product lines, we enhance the ability to quickly adapt to changes in the product mix in the market.

Vertical Integration: Enhancing Control and Quality

At the heart of delivering exceptional quality lies control—control over the components, materials, and processes that define every product. Through vertical integration, we take ownership of developing and manufacturing critical technologies in-house, eliminating dependency on third-party suppliers and avoiding delays or quality inconsistencies. This approach ensures not just reliability, but a seamless alignment of every element in the supply chain.

Our vertical integration covers a wide range of technologies, including Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL) arrays, Electro-absorption Modulated Lasers (EML), CW Lasers, isolator-enabling garnet materials, silicon photonics, passive optics, and advanced optical assemblies. We go deeper, controlling production down to the material level along with specialized powders gases, and building each component to meet rigorous quality standards.

By managing these essential blocks from the start, we deliver more than just products-we provide solutions that are crafted with precision, consistency and excellence.

A Diversified Global Manufacturing Footprint

In a volatile market, adaptability is essential.  We recognize that a flexible and geographically diverse manufacturing network is the foundation of sustainable growth and innovation. Our operations across Malaysia, China, Vietnam, and the U.S. provides ability to shift production seamlessly, safeguarding against regional disruptions such as political instability, trade barriers, or natural disasters.

Our compound semiconductor fabrication, where our lasers are made, is strategically located in the EU and the US. Additionally, key materials like garnet for datacom transceivers are sourced domestically from the U.S, ensuring reliable access to essential components. With over 300 million units shipped from our Ipoh-Malaysia facility- our first offshore manufacturing site for transceivers- we are proud to serve the industry as a leader in high volume production, ensuring timely delivery for you. The vast majority of our transceivers are produced at this facility.
