Coherent’s unique portfolio of solid-state and semiconductor lasers, and our patented Optically Pumped Semiconductor Laser (OPSL) technology has enabled bioinstrumentation, medical and defense applications to migrate from the use of mature laser technologies to new technologies that enable new applications.

Bionstrumentation Market
In the bioinstrumentation market, our solid-state and semiconductor lasers are included in systems designed for flow cytometry and drug discovery. Our OPSL technology provides access to virtually any wavelength which is  key to fluorescence based applications. Our Sapphire, Compass and CUBE laser solutions advance the dynamic range of DNA sequencing and drug discovery to support both research to identify genes related to diseases, as well as the development of next generation pharmaceuticals.

Medical Applications
In medical applications, our laser solutions cover diagnostics and treatment. In ophthalmology, retina scanning enables early diagnosis of diseases such as diabetes. Our Excimer lasers are key to vision correcting LASIK procedures while the higher power versions of our OPSLs treat age related macular degeneration (AMD) through photocoagulation. Our GEM series CO2 lasers, widely used in skin resurfacing and aesthetic applications, round out our medical applications portfolio.

Forensics
In the growing field of forensics, our compact solid-state TracER laser system is based on our OPSL technology, and directly addresses the needs of large-scale criminal investigation organizations by providing a superior combination of high brightness and portability to bear on the most difficult forensic analysis.

Avionics & Defense
In the avionics and defense sectors, applications for Coherent lasers range from harsh, flight-qualified hardware to rugged, ground-based instruments.

OPS Technology Used in the Treatment of AMD
Did you know that Coherent's Optically Pumped Semiconductor Laser (OPSL) technology has the promise to improve both effectiveness and patient comfort in laser based treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)? The unique ability of our OPSL technology to match a wavelength to an application has led to the development of a high-power yellow (577 nm) laser for use in the treatment of AMD. The 577 nm wavelength was designed to match the peak in absorption of oxygenated hemoglobin thereby allowing treatment to occur at a lower power level thus reducing the stress and heat-load placed on the eye. This technology is finding traction with both Medical OEM’s and Ophthalmologists.
