Slab Technology
Slab laser technology offers excellent beam quality and low cost of ownership for sealed CO2 lasers. In our sealed CO2 lasers the slab laser gas is excited by RF radiation in a narrow space in between 2 rectangular electrodes. Laser power is defined by the electrode space. Laser gas is diffusion cooled by the electrodes, so the gas does not need to be externally cooled – no gas flow is necessary. The laser can be operated sealed off, with no external gas supply. RF solid state technology excites the laser gas to an average output power of more than 1kW. The slab cavity emits a laser beam which is narrow in one axis and long in the other axis. External beam shaping optics forms the beam to excellent mode quality. Typical M² values are <1.2. Other benefits are its pulsing capabilities. Latest Slab laser developments offer pulse frequencies up to 200 kHz at low pulse fall times. In the lower frequencies, peak power of up to 2.5-3x of the nominal laser power is possible. Pulses with faster fall time deliver more of the total pulse energy above the material processing threshold. Just as superior beam quality leads to tighter spatial focus, faster fall time translates into tighter temporal focus. Both effects maximize the ratio of usable power/total power. The end result is both faster cutting and reduced HAZ (heat affected zone), as well as faster piercing during drilling and cut initiation. After decades of continuous improvement the latest slab lasers from Coherent offer designed in reliability and a MTBF of >60,000 hours.

Waveguide Technology
Waveguide technology is used for sealed CO2 lasers equal to or below 100W. The laser beam is generated in a small ceramic waveguide between two electrodes. The laser beam is guided through the ceramic wave guide and delivers excellent mode quality. The cross section of the wave guide defines the beam shape and quality of the laser beam. If it is square shape, no external beam correction is required. Typical M² values for this technology are <1.2. Lengthening the gain waveguide resonator is the only practical way to scale a waveguide CO2 laser to higher power without sacrificing beam quality. In order to have a small and compact package, the wave guide is folded. Having a long laser cavity delivers a laser with excellent short-term and long-term stability. The solid state RF power supply is integrated to the laser head. This reduces space requirements and simplifies integration. Additionally, it eliminates the cost and complexity of using a shielded RF umbilical which could be a source of early failure in stressful operating environments. The CW laser design may be directly pulsed up to 25 kHz, with very short pulse fall times. Applications which require fast pulsing or cycling benefit from that feature. After decades of continuous improvement Coherent wave guide lasers offer designed in reliability and a MTBF of >70,000 hours.
